The manager of Health Services of Lanzarote, Pablo Eguía, intervened on Radio Lanzarote - Onda Cero to justify the Canary Islands Government's rejection of building a new health center in Playa Honda, in San Bartolomé, of up to 3,602 square meters.
"We don't understand a project of 3,600 square meters," the manager emphasized. "Political debate is one thing, and the real needs of the population are another," he argued about the San Bartolomé City Council's proposal to build a new health center that multiplies the current capacity by seven.
Thus, he maintained that "municipalism is dramatizing the situation in many municipalities" of the archipelago and that the investments being made in Health in Lanzarote are "for all citizens of all municipalities".
During his speech, Eguía did not clarify what the regional course of action is to solve the saturation situation that this health center is suffering, despite having acknowledged that this and other centers on the island are overwhelmed.
Eguía reported on the morning show *Buenos días, Lanzarote* that "the functional plan for that health center and for that population is 1,800 meters and the master plan contemplates 1,500 square meters," multiplying the capacity of the current center by four, and has rejected the viability of the new center reaching 3,600 meters."Resources are not unlimited; whoever governs, there are always budgets and planning," Eguía defended, criticizing the "staging" around this project and assuring that "if we had unlimited money," the 3,602-square-meter project "could not cost less than 8.3 million euros."
These statements come amid controversy with the municipality of San Bartolomé, where the PSOE of San Bartolomé has denounced that the Canarian president, Fernando Clavijo (CC), is discriminating against municipalities "by their political affiliations," alluding to the fact that Pablo Eguía has been chosen by the government of Coalición Canaria and the Popular Party to head the island's Health Services.
Eguía has stated that the health center in this town currently has around 471 square meters and that the town already has 10,000 people with access to social security. Furthermore, he has assured that forecasts indicate that Playa Honda could reach 12,000 people with access to health services.
