The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands will receive 1.5 million euros from the Cabildo de Lanzarote for the creation of shade spaces in different public educational centers on the island and La Graciosa.
Following the agreement signed this Friday by the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, and the Minister of Education of the Regional Executive, Poli Suárez, the subsidy will be distributed among fifteen centers in Arrecife, seven in Teguise and La Graciosa, five in San Bartolomé, four in Yaiza, three in Tías, two in Haría and another two in Tinajo.
In that sense, Suárez thanked the Corporation and, in particular, its president, "for their commitment to education and, above all, to the schoolchildren of the island, assuming a co-responsibility that makes them an example for the rest of the institutions of the archipelago."
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, explained that "this measure has as its main objective to improve the quality of life of the students, providing rest areas protected from high temperatures. "Through this subsidy, which we are giving to the Government of the Canary Islands, the infrastructures of nearly forty centers will be improved, thus responding to a historical demand of the island's educational community."
For her part, the Councilor for Education of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Ascensión Toledo, highlighted the importance of this investment to guarantee the well-being of the students. "This project not only improves educational infrastructures, but also contributes to the health and safety of students. In addition, it reflects the cooperation between administrations to respond to the real needs of our schools," said Toledo.
Thanks to this agreement, in Arrecife the following infant and primary education centers (CEIP) will benefit: Nieves Toledo, Capellanía del Yágabo, Titerroy, Argana Alta, Benito Méndez Tarajano, Los Geranios, Adolfo Topham and Antonio Zerolo; the Argana Compulsory Education Center (CEO) and the secondary education institutes (IES) Agustín Espinosa, Las Salinas, César Manrique, Las Maretas, En Altavista and Blas Cabrera Felipe.
In San Bartolomé, the aid will go to the CEIPs Ajei, Playa Honda and Alcalde Alexis Tejera Lemes, and the IES San Bartolomé and Playa Honda, while, in Teguise and La Graciosa, it will go to the following centers: the CEIPs Doctor Alfonso Spínola, Tao and Costa Teguise, the IES Teguise and Costa Teguise, the Special Education Center (CEE) Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes and the only center in Graciosa, the CEO Ignacio Aldecoa.
In Haría, the CEIP San Juan and the IES Haría; and in Tías, the CEIP La Asomada-Mácher, and the IES Tías and Puerto del Carmen will be the centers that receive this subsidy.
Finally, in Tinajo, it will be allocated to the CEIP Virgen de los Volcanes and the IES Tinajo, while in Yaiza, the beneficiaries will be the CEIPs Yaiza and Playa Blanca, the CEO En Playa Blanca and the IES Yaiza.
The amount of the subsidy is the maximum that the Cabildo can pay, so, if necessary, it will be the Government of the Canary Islands that assumes the difference until covering the total cost of the action. Likewise, and to facilitate the execution of the projects, the payment of the subsidy will be made in advance, and the actions must be completed before June 30, 2026 (although the investments may be justified until September of that year).
