The general director of Educational Promotion of the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports, Pilar Teresa Díaz Luis, inaugurated this Wednesday in Lanzarote a meeting called "The school canteen as an educational and health promotion space", which is held in Arrecife. A total of 60 people attended the conference, which was attended by the island's director of Education, Juan Cruz Sepúlveda.

The Ministry of Education organized this event with the aim of making it a space to share "views, concerns and illusions, as well as to analyze the reality of this service under the prism of education and health promotion," the Government of the Canary Islands reported in a statement. The meeting will serve attendees to obtain information, knowledge and perspectives that help to intervene and improve the service offered in school canteens in Lanzarote, and by extension, the rest of the Canary Islands. It will also help to face the challenges of the sector and its potential.

This course is aimed primarily at all personnel in charge of school canteens, including directors of educational centers that have this service, representatives of catering companies that supply school menus, and other equally important institutions that intervene in the process, such as the Education Departments of the municipalities of Lanzarote; representatives of AMPAS and Federations of AMPAS; canteen staff and the Educational Inspectorate.

Reflection and analysis

Among the objectives of the Meeting is to serve as a space for reflection and analysis on the role of school canteens in the current socio-educational context, as well as to contribute to the recognition and enhancement of the canteen as an integral educational and health promotion space. At the same time, Education aims to promote nutritional education in the family, school and community environment, and to promote the exchange of experiences and information and the dissemination of appropriate practices.

The program of the day included a presentation by the president of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Luis Serra Majem, who spoke about "The school canteen as an educational and health promotion space. Subsequently, a presentation was given by Francisco Artiles, technician of Complementary Services and School Residences of the General Directorate of Educational Promotion, whose title was "Evolution of school canteens in the Canary Islands. Future trends".

Finally, the day concluded with the formation of working groups that reflected on four essential areas such as the service provided by the school canteen; the menu; the integration and presence of this space and the physical and psychosocial environment of the school canteen.
