The mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, "lied" in November 2020 when she publicly announced that "the company holding the concession for the underground parking of the Islas Canarias Park was going to pay for the repair of the park, which was in a state of great neglect," says the PSOE of Arrecife.

"Astrid Pérez said then that they had required the company to assume the costs, as established in the concession title, but two and a half years have passed and the park remains the same or worse, so she continues to fail to comply with the obligation to maintain and preserve it," according to the spokesperson for the Socialist Group of the City Council, Cristina Duque.

The socialist spokesperson recalls that, two months later, the City Council announced that the supposed rehabilitation works of the Islas Canarias Park had begun and that the company holding the concession for the parking would pay for the expenses of said renovation. "On that occasion, Astrid Pérez also lied again," says the socialist spokesperson. The municipal press release said: "Now, after many years of neglect and abandonment, the Islas Canarias Park will once again have a well-maintained and restored image, thanks to the requirement made by the first mayor of Arrecife to the concessionaire company to comply with the provisions of the concession title," says Duque.

The parking and the park that exists on its roof were built based on an administrative concession granted by Costas in the year 2000. The title of the concession states that the conservation, maintenance, and repair of the park corresponds to the concessionaire company. The responsible company is Aparcamiento Parque Islas Canarias, SL, in which the Arrecife City Council has 11 percent of the shares. "The councilors who represent the City Council on the Board of Directors of this company are María Jesús Tovar and Elisabeth Merino Betancor," according to the mayor of Arrecife herself in 2020.
