Nira Fierro, the Secretary of Organization of the PSOE Canarias, has been forceful in assessing the boycott staged by the regional governments led by the Popular Party at the Sectoral Conference on Childhood, convened this Thursday in Madrid to address the solidarity reception of unaccompanied migrant minors currently in the Archipelago.

“The abandonment of the Popular Party in the Canary Islands is astonishing, outrageous, and repeated. We have seen it once again with this boycott, which has prevented a conference from being held to address nothing more and nothing less than the reception of migrant children who are in the Canary Islands,” said Nira Fierro.

She warned that this attitude is a further indication that the Popular Party “thinks more about itself than about Spain and the Canary Islands,” by blocking attempts to articulate a solidarity response to the migratory phenomenon. In this regard, Fierro also criticized the position of the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, whom she accused of failing to hold his government partner accountable.

“He is very brave when criticizing Pedro Sánchez and the Spanish Government, but he is quite cowardly when it comes to pointing out the Popular Party, even though he himself has said that the solidarity reception of minors is a priority for the Canary Islands,” she maintained.

Fierro emphasized that Clavijo has not shown the same willingness to meet with regional leaders of the PP, as he has done with other leaders such as the Basque lehendakari, Imanol Pradales (PNV). “We have not seen that courage to meet with Ms. Ayuso, who rejects migrant minors, or with Mr. López Miras, who has negotiated with Vox the rights of these children.”

The Secretary of Organization recalled that the PP voted against a non-binding motion on the reception of minors in 2023 and, in April 2025, rejected the amendment to Article 35 of the Foreigners Act, aimed at improving institutional coordination.

“Certainly, the Canary Islands do not deserve a Popular Party that abandons us or a president who lends a hand to that abandonment,” said Fierro.

The PSOE Canarias considers it urgent to resume institutional dialogue with all communities to guarantee the care and protection of migrant minors, as well as a fair and proportional distribution among territories.
