The vice president and councilor of Public Works, Planning and Project Coordination, Jacobo Medina, and the mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, presented this Monday the initiative 'Lanzarote on Bike', with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility among citizens and promoting the use of bicycles on the island. The Councilor for Mobility of the Cabildo, José Francisco Hernández, was also present at the event.
“Within the framework of the EDUSI Conurban Azul Strategy, from the Cabildo de Lanzarote we are strongly committed to a new urban model that favors mobility for pedestrians and cyclists”, Jacobo Medina stressed. “Proof of this is the work that is being carried out on a new section of the Bike Path that connects the coast of Arrecife with the tourist center of Costa Teguise, once we have completed the work on the Los Mármoles section”, he added.
According to the Cabildo, Lanzarote will thus have "one of the longest seafront promenades with a bike lane in all of Europe, with more than 26 kilometers in length, which will connect the tourist areas of Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen, with the capital of the island in the center, as an interconnection hub". The promenade also includes the connection with the Port of Arrecife and the Lanzarote Airport. The action, co-financed by 85% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has involved an investment of 2,672,259.19 euros.
Photographic contest and family ride
To publicize the different sections of the bike lane that run along the Arrecife coastline, the Cabildo and the City Council have organized the event 'Lanzarote on Bike' which consists of the celebration of a photographic contest that will start on May 24 and whose first prize is an electric bicycle. Likewise, on June 5, coinciding with Environment Day, a family bike ride will take place, departing from La Marina de Arrecife at 11:00 a.m.
The capital's mayor, Ástrid Pérez, highlighted “the importance of this type of campaign that raises awareness among citizens about the use of more sustainable and ecological transport such as bicycles". "We have a wonderful marina and, little by little, Arrecife is becoming a friendly city that perfectly combines the hustle and bustle of daily life with walks and sustainable mobility, and as an example we have the Avenida Marítima, where vehicles, bicycles and scooters circulate with respect and taking care of the rules”, he indicated.
Participation through social networks
Participants in the photographic contest must be of legal age and upload the photo to their public Instagram and Facebook profiles with the hashtag #Lanzaroteenbici and mentioning and tagging @edusi_lanzarote.
Regarding the theme of the photo, it must reflect the practice of cycling along the new section of the Arrecife bike lane, between Puerto Naos and Charco de San Ginés, highlighting the sustainable transport of the capital. In addition, the photos must show cyclists, individually, as a couple or in a group, next to one of the six points indicated by an exclusive totem of the contest.
The photo that receives the most votes will be the winner and its author will receive an electric bicycle as a prize. In addition, the five successive photos with the highest number of votes will also receive a prize of a complete set of cyclist accessories. The voting limit for the count is set at 12:00 a.m. on June 7. The contest rules can be found at www.edusilanzarote.com.
