The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and regional deputy, Oswaldo Betancort, held a meeting this Wednesday in Tenerife with the Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, and the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty, Narvay Quintero, to detail the proposal of the Lanzarote Cabildo for the implementation of the Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport at the Maritime Fisheries Institute of the Canary Islands, located in Arrecife.

During this meeting held in the Regional Chamber, Betancort was accompanied by the vice president of the Cabildo, María Jesús Tovar, the Lanzarote parliamentarian, Cristina Calero, the island councilor of Education, Ascensión Toledo, and the president of the University Foundation of Lanzarote, José Torres.

In the meeting held in the Autonomous Chamber, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote collected the good institutional response from the Executive to present the initiative in Parliament through an upcoming Non-Law Proposal (PNL) that Oswaldo Betancort will present as a nationalist deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The island president "has detailed weighty arguments that support the defense of his proposal, highlighting the need to strengthen higher education in the maritime field in Lanzarote and La Graciosa." Betancort has thanked "the sensitivity of the Government presided over by Fernando Clavijo to the project and hopes that in Parliament, soon, it will be able to gather the unanimous support of the entire Chamber".

Economic diversification

The Cabildo of Lanzarote approved a few weeks ago an institutional declaration of support for the creation of this Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport, an education that must find its place in the training planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, but which has as its guarantee a Maritime Fisheries Institute that already has equipped classrooms, laboratories, navigation simulators, boats and a student residence for 130 students. Its location in Puerto de Naos, a strategic enclave, offers students an ideal environment for practical learning.

“This degree would be an essential step to become a benchmark in the maritime world, offering a training alternative that allows our young people to have access to higher education without having to move outside the archipelago”, said the president of the Cabildo.

“We are not only facing an educational investment, but also a commitment to the sustainable future of our land”, concludes Oswaldo Betancort.

The meeting held by the president of the Cabildo with Migdalia Machín and Narvay Quintero is another step towards the materialization of this project that promises to offer "significant opportunities for the youth of Lanzarote", in addition to contributing to the economic and social development of the archipelago.
