The President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, made an appeal this Sunday to all the municipalities of the island to collaborate in putting taxis into service at major events that bring together a multitude of people.
“This weekend at the Arrecife Carnival, the precariousness of the public transport service in the capital to meet the demand of all users has become evident again,” says Oswaldo Betancort.
Despite the request made by the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, for the rest of the municipalities to collaborate in reinforcing the taxi service during the capital's Carnival, the reality is that from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, when the performances of the Carnival program in the capital culminated, it has been difficult to find a taxi.
“The queues during the early hours of Saturday at the Arrecife stops, with waits of hours, is a situation that the Cabildo of Lanzarote wants to avoid, because we understand that we cannot ask people not to use their cars, to enjoy the Carnival with caution but then they cannot have a public service that safely returns them to their homes,” added the President of the Cabildo.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote is determined to solve this situation and for this it is preparing all the necessary documentation to declare the port and airport of Arrecife as sensitive areas and, at the same time, to make intermunicipal collaboration of the three taxi cooperatives mandatory in those massive events.
“It is not just a matter of improving the airport queues but of ensuring that the people of Lanzarote have the possibility of returning safely and quickly to their homes after enjoying major events such as the Arrecife Carnival,” concludes Betancort.
