Asier Antona resigns from the presidency of the Canarian PP and ends the standoff with the national leadership

The regional leader of the PP, Asier Antona, has resigned this Tuesday from the presidency of the party in the Canary Islands, thus ending the struggle he had been maintaining for weeks with the national leadership. Within that pulse, the possibility of imposing a management team on the islands had been sounding strongly, but finally what the party has done is assign new positions to Antona in Madrid.

This same Tuesday, the Parliament of the Canary Islands has approved the proposal of the popular to Asier Antona to become one of the three senators that correspond to the Autonomous Community in the Upper House. In addition, the party has appointed him deputy spokesperson for the group in the Senate, as well as national secretary for Autonomous Policy.

"I am stepping aside from the leadership of the PP in the Canary Islands but I am taking on new challenges and new important responsibilities," Antona stressed in an appearance before the media after presiding over the last Autonomous Board of Directors of the formation as president of the party. In addition, he has "thanked" this designation to the national leadership of the party, with whom he had differences since the last Congress, in which he did not support the winning candidate, Pablo Casado. Later, those differences worsened due to the negotiation of pacts in the Canary Islands after the last local and regional elections, in which the national leadership was betting on an agreement with CC.

"They will have my loyalty"

Although he has had words for the national leadership, Antona has conveyed his greatest gratitude to his colleagues in the Canary Islands, who he recalled gave him "massive support" three years ago to become president, and who he believes have continued to support him until today.

In addition, he has pledged to "continue working intensely" and to support the new leadership of the party, which for the moment will be in charge of the general secretary, Australia Navarro. "They will have my loyalty to continue contributing and collaborating so that the PP of the Canary Islands continues to grow," Antona said.

Precisely that is what he said was one of the objectives he set himself when he assumed the Presidency, adding that some will think that he has achieved it and others that he has not. "But I have left my skin in it. Life, health, time and family for this organization and for this party," he added.
