Nieves Arrocha, councilor of the Popular Party (PP) in the Teguise City Council, has presented this Wednesday, February 8, her resignation to the act of councilor in the Consistory and has reported that she is also leaving the Popular Party.
Through a letter sent to the media, Arrocha has communicated her decision and her reasons, which stem from "the feeling of emptiness" that she has felt from the party in the last year, and have made her aware that "to work with respect towards the neighbors we must first respect ourselves as politicians as people."
In this way, the Popular Party is left without councilors in the City Council since the other councilor, Jonás Álvarez, also left the formation to create a new party, "Primero Teguise".
The work and dedication "has not been enough"
In the statement, the now former councilor explains that although she never thought that the moment would come when this situation would occur, since she has been working with the PP since 2011 "without hesitation" and with the feeling that it was her home and her family. However, she relates that the reality is that now she feels like "a complete stranger."
In 2019, as Arrocha recalls, she ran for the electoral lists "with one of my greatest political aspirations", to be a councilor of the Teguise City Council, a fact that she achieved and that she has faced "tirelessly."
Despite this, she regrets that for the popular formation all that work and dedication "has not been enough" to feel represented by her: "The feeling of emptiness that they have made me feel during the last year makes it better to leave the party, mainly because to work with respect towards the neighbors we must first respect ourselves as politicians as people", she explains.
In that sense, she has advanced that they will not find her in the street "talking about the dirty laundry of the house", so she has asked the party leadership "to do the same."
"I have no problem with the PP in the Canary Islands"
Despite the above, Arrocha thanks the Popular Party of Lanzarote for allowing her to enjoy a stage in the Island Council and for "putting me as a companion to one of the people from whom I have learned the most, Rita Martín."
Beyond that, she clarifies that she has not had "any problem" with the party in the Canary Islands, from which she says that she takes "very good friends" and also launches a thank you to the "twenty corporation colleagues, who have had the objective of building a better Teguise."
Likewise, she apologizes "to the neighbors" who trusted her and put their vote so that she would represent them and work for them, "leaving today the responsibility that had been entrusted to me."
"But, things have to be done well with consequence and knowing that the rules of the game are not always the most pleasant," she remarked.
"I do not abandon politics"
Arrocha continues indicating that although she is "young and with very little experience" in politics, when she took "a step forward" it was because she was clear that she did not want to "fall into the actions of the old politics, that which we have seen so much in Lanzarote." Therefore, with "much sorrow, sadness, but above all humility", she registers her resignation.
To conclude, she remembers a phrase that she was once told, "Never abandon the love of politics".
"I do not abandon it, but from today it is time to change chapter, do it differently. I still believe that Lanzarote and La Graciosa need a new, fresh project, that has identity and that leaves behind the politics of mud", concludes the former councilor of Teguise.
