The Arrecife City Council has announced that it will launch a new public service of electric bicycles. The municipal government has deployed the installation of nine stations with charging points, located in different areas of the capital of Lanzarote, and has put out to tender the drafting of its ordinances.

The Department of Transport and Mobility has published on the Public Sector Procurement Platform the official tender for the drafting of the new ordinances that will regulate this service, including the fiscal criteria, for the use of this new sustainable transport service, free of fumes and noise, in the capital of Lanzarote. The official announcement of the tender was published on August 27.

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the Councilor for Mobility, Mario González Altube, reported on its bidding this Tuesday, during a visit they made to one of these electric bicycle charging stations located near the pedestrian area next to El Reducto beach.

A system that adds to public transport

Regarding the implementation of this new system, which seeks to reinforce the municipal public transport services, the council hopes to encourage the use of urban buses and bicycles for their travel in the city, both with residents and visitors.

The City Council has argued in a statement that "Arrecife, due to its elevation next to the sea, and a flat municipality, offers multiple advantages for the use of bicycles as an urban mobility system." In addition, it has pointed out that its implementation "will contribute directly to the reduction of motorized traffic and polluting emissions", since it represents "a clean, efficient transport alternative adapted to the needs of citizens".

The Councilor for Transport and Mobility, Mario González, has detailed that, among the main benefits of this bicycle system, it will allow integration with other means of public transport, improving air quality, reducing noise pollution and promoting healthy lifestyles.

In addition, being electric bicycles, the range of potential users is expanded, and barriers related to physical effort or age are eliminated. The first institution of the capital of Lanzarote has indicated that Arrecife is a pioneering municipality on the island of Lanzarote in the implementation of these systems.

Nine points and 60 bicycles

Currently, the Arrecife City Council is completing the installation of nine bicycle charging points and has acquired, through public tender, the acquisition of about sixty assisted pedaling electric bicycles. These actions have benefited from the second call of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan - Financed by the European Union - NextGenerationEU.

From the Arrecife City Council it is reported that firms or professionals who wish to submit to this tender for the technical development of the ordinances have until September 12, 2025, until 2:00 p.m.
