Nearly 400 residents live in the area known as El Diseminado de Argana Alta, in the Arrecife neighborhood of Argana. To access their homes, they must do so via dirt roads that were severely affected after the intense downpour of water that fell last Saturday, April 12, when the ravines of Montaña Mina and Zonzamas dragged a large amount of water and mud.
That same day, the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, deployed an operation with more than a hundred personnel to assist the population and restore normality. The rains left numerous streets flooded in the capital and other areas of Lanzarote, which forced the mobilization of emergency resources. The municipal device was joined by the Security and Emergency Consortium of Lanzarote, under the coordination of Councilor Kiko Aparicio.
Argana Alta was one of the most affected points, due to its proximity to the ravines. From Saturday night, City Council machinery began working in the Diseminado area to reopen access to homes. The mayor himself went to the area to supervise the emergency work.
Two weeks later, the works continue with trucks and mechanical shovels removing the accumulated mud and reconditioning the roads. Yonathan de León has reiterated that the municipal operation will remain active until full accessibility and safety for residents is guaranteed. According to records, nearly 70 liters per square meter fell in less than two hours, which caused the collapse of the natural drainage system and subsequent flooding.
