The Arrecife City Council is launching new works in these first weeks of 2026 to improve the public lighting network in the urban area of La Concha, bordering San Bartolomé. This municipal electrification project, the first undertaken by the City Council in this residential area of the capital during the 21st century, is part of the plans underway by the city's mayor, Yonathan de León Machín, to provide better public facilities to the residential areas of the municipality.

The capital's City Council has awarded this project to the UTE formed by the companies IMESAPI, S.A and Transportes y Excavaciones Tiagua, S.L. The investment amounts to 746,983.42 euros, including taxes. The company will have approximately 10 months to carry out the work, which will be undertaken in two phases to ensure that the streets of La Concha always have nighttime lighting during the execution of the works.

The City Council, through the Department of Public Works—the area to which the Municipal Public Lighting Service is attached—has secured funding for this tender from a contribution by the Island's First Institution through the Insular Improvement Plan, supervised and executed by the Department of Public Works, headed by the insular minister Jacobo Medina. The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the Minister of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, visited La Concha this week, where they announced this award, following a tender by the City Council, where the award contract has already been signed.

Complete Renovation of La Concha's Lighting

The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, who is also the direct head of the Department of Public Works, explained that "with this new project, 188 lampposts will be renovated and will be equipped, after installation, with LED lamps, which will generate significant energy savings as well as contribute to less light pollution in this area of the island's aeronautical servitude zone due to its proximity to César Manrique Lanzarote Airport." The project includes the installation of new luminaires— the mayor detailed— which will also involve new underground conduits, the opening of new inspection chambers, and a general control panel system.

The mayor recalled that the lighting work in La Concha complements the Municipal Plan for the renovation of the public lighting network, with actions already carried out in Maneje and Argana Alta, and currently underway in the Tinasoria neighborhood, as part of the urban image renovation of this social housing complex.

The insular councilor for Public Works, Jacobo Medina, highlighted that "the close collaboration of his Department with the municipalities of Lanzarote is allowing the execution of a series of works that result in the improvement of public spaces, increasing the quality of life for citizens, and also, with this important insular investment in electrical works, reducing energy costs." Jacobo Medina added that his Department "has a line of close collaboration underway with the City Councils of Lanzarote, including the capital, to renew public lighting with systems that provide greater safety and energy efficiency." The councilor recalled that he has recently announced other insular works to renew the night lighting of major insular roads.

The UTE awarded this new tender by the City Council, with island financing, has 10 months to carry out the work, allowing the La Concha area to debut new public lighting on its streets by the end of 2026
