The Secretary General of the Popular Party, Ángel Acebes, considered this Wednesday that it is "democratically unsustainable" that the Minister of Justice of the central government remains in charge of the position that corresponds to him the direction of the prosecutor's office and the anti-corruption prosecutors and simultaneously be the candidate for the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Acebes considered that "due to a basic principle in democracy such as independence" and due to a simple "ethical behavior", López Aguilar should have resigned "from the first day he was appointed candidate", since he is acting at the same time as interlocutor with the Attorney General of the State, who directs the prosecutors who have precisely undertaken actions that have harmed CC and PP in the Canary Islands, his two rivals in the polls.

Acebes recalled that in the last question during a plenary session that he asked Maria Teresa Fernández de la Vega, she "was not able to give me an answer" to "how can it be" that the Minister of Justice continues to be Minister and candidate at the same time. For Acebes, the situation in which López Aguilar finds himself is completely "unsustainable" and "says little about the candidate and Minister of Justice".

With these words, the popular leader gave his support to the president of the Canarian PP, José Manuel Soria, in his statements that López Aguilar could be directing the actions of the prosecutors in order to harm his rivals in the Canary Islands. It was also in those statements where Soria stated that the PSOE had "killed and kidnapped", which led to an immediate announcement from the socialist federal leadership to act against the leader of the Canarian PP through a lawsuit for libel and slander, which to this day the conservatives have no record of having been filed.

In this regard, Ángel Acebes considered that the PSOE "would do well to take care of its affairs", since in aspects related to corruption "the PP has acted impeccably". Acebes recalled that the mayor of Teror, from the PSOE, is being prosecuted for misappropriation, and that the socialists have not demanded his resignation, nor have they encouraged his expulsion "nor have they said a peep".

"The PP is clear that its behaviors are honest," said Acebes, who supported Soria by saying that the populars have no final conviction either for illegal financing or for improper use of reserved funds, "as the PSOE did."

The number two of the populars at the national level stated that he had traveled to the Canary Islands to make clear the "total support" for the Popular Party of the Canary Islands, after a year in which the party has been shaken by cases of corruption. When evaluating the cases that occurred in the Canary Islands, Acebes recalled that the PP has more than 50,000 elected public officials, and said that "we cannot prevent a person from committing an irregularity." Therefore, when it happens, Acebes maintained that the PP's action "is absolutely clear and transparent: if someone commits an irregularity, there is no one more firm than the PP in asking for responsibilities, asking for the dismissal of their positions, initiating a procedure for expulsion from the party and immediately suspending membership".

"The PP will never accept cases of corruption nor will it be an accomplice to them," said Acebes, who assured that "one of our flags" has been that of honesty. Acebes recalled that when the PP came to the Government in 1996, the third concern of citizens was corruption, and when the PP left the Government, corruption was not even among the top twenty concerns of citizens." "If there is an isolated case, we act firmly and forcefully."

TELDE AND FUERTEVENTURA

Regarding the possible candidacy in Fuerteventura of Domingo González Arroyo, Ángel Acebes said that the party has not yet made those appointments, and considered that the party "has its times" for these decisions. Acebes did not elaborate on the fact that González Arroyo is charged in a matter of alleged corruption, and limited himself to saying that the PP has "its tempos" to make those decisions. "We have an electoral committee that is the one that will make the decision."

On the other hand, Acebes was asked if a management team is going to be created in Telde, after the recent arrest of the party president and said that the party trusts the people who are currently in the local leadership, despite the fact that it was beheaded and with only three people after the arrests of Operation Faycán.

Acebes met with the Regional Board of Directors of the populars, in which Soria gave him a report on the situation of the party, in which he recalled that they have acted "with clarity, firmness and forcefulness" in the face of cases of corruption. Acebes affirmed that the national leadership of the PP will be very present in the Canary Islands in the coming months to reinforce what is a clear "alternative" to the Government of the Canary Islands.
