There is already a pre-notice: December 2nd. The cleaning workers of the company Clusa, which is in charge of these tasks in the schools of Arrecife, have threatened to go on strike due to the delays they suffer in collecting their payrolls. The City Council pays the company, but it does not pay the salaries to its employees. According to the general secretary of UGT, César Reyes, they have been without pay for a month.
The employees who are in charge of cleaning in the schools could carry out a stoppage next week. The Arrecife Council hopes that this situation will not be reached, although it confirms that it has already contacted the company Clusa to try to tackle this problem.
"The Arrecife City Council is fulfilling its obligation and to date the workers have also fulfilled their obligations and have cleaned the schools," defends the Councilor for Education, María Dolores Rodríguez, who assures that for the moment "there is no problem".
However, she is concerned about the possible strike on December 2. "We knew that it seemed that they had delays this last month, so we contacted the company. We pay and they have to maintain their obligations", indicates Rodríguez.
"Disruption" in the educational community
"I hope we don't get to the strike, because it would be a widespread disruption for the educational community", says the Councilor for Education, who defends the work of the Council in this matter: "It is not up to the City Council to solve this issue, but to the company".
The Arrecife City Council has not considered for the moment rescuing the cleaning service in the schools of the capital of Lanzarote, as the unions have begun to request. "I don't know what may happen, but we have not had difficulties to date to think about this," she says.
