A group of 18 young people from the Argana Reception Center visited the Arrecife Animal Welfare Center this Monday, accompanied by two of their monitors, in order to learn more about the care received by the approximately 30 dogs and fifty cats that are currently housed in the facilities of the aforementioned Municipal Center.
Both the Councilor for Animal Welfare of the Arrecife City Council, Jacobo Lemes, and the Councilor responsible for the Immigration Area of the Corporation of the capital of Lanzarote, Maite Corujo, participated in this activity which had the dual objective of contributing to the social integration of unaccompanied migrant minors while promoting respect and responsibility towards animals.
In this sense, Jacobo Lemes recalls that "the Department he directs has been programming several initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the dogs and cats housed, as well as facilitating their adoption, as is the case of the volunteer walk program whose registrations can now be made at the Animal Welfare Center itself (calle Los Invernaderos s/n) from Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m."
For her part, Maite Corujo stressed "the willingness of the Immigration Area of the City Council to favor any type of initiative that aims to promote the integration of minors into society, as has been the case of this visit in which an agent from the Animal Protection and Environment Unit of the Arrecife Local Police also participated, who explained and gave a practical demonstration to the young people about the training of the dog Yuco, one of the members of the Canine Unit of the aforementioned Corps."
