The NO/ON structure, from the "Basuraleza, the Footprint of Ignorance" project, by the Papacría.com collective, has been installed this Monday in the roundabout of the IES of Puerto del Carmen.
"Young people are making the big problem of garbage visible. The students of the institutes of the municipality of Tías have participated in this island project that, at a minimum, invites us to a great reflection and a necessary debate on the waste we generate, something that we have to reduce immediately," said the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, during its installation.
In addition to the mayor, the event was attended by the Councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, the Councilor for Education, Tomás Silvera, the first Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Tourism, Mame Fernández, the second Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Citizen Participation, Nicolás Saavedra, and the promoter of the project, Goñi García.
Create environmental awareness
The Councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez applauded initiatives such as the Basuraleza project, "which not only creates controversy but also sensitizes students and part of the population to the enormous problem we currently face with the large amount of garbage, cigarette butts, papers, cans and plastics that we find around us."
For his part, the Councilor for Education, Tomás Silvera, stressed the importance of creating environmental awareness from the early stages of education. "We want the presence of garbage in our environment not to be normalized and, in this particular case, in the surroundings of our educational centers," he said.
More than 300 young people from the institutes of Tías and Puerto del Carmen participated in the project from the municipality of Tías, attending talks about garbage and its impact, collecting and geolocating some waste and making reflections and comments about it. "We are not a cleaning service. The students collected less than 15% of the garbage that was in the vicinity of the centers, but it was enough to be aware of the seriousness of the problem," said Goñi García.
The NO/ON structure will remain in the roundabout of the IES of Puerto del Carmen until August 24, the date on which it will be moved to another municipality on the island.
