IN THE CANARY ISLANDS AS A WHOLE, THE SURGICAL WAITING LIST HAS BEEN REDUCED

Waiting lists increase for surgery and medical consultations at the Molina Orosa Hospital

A total of 1,721 people are waiting to undergo surgery in Lanzarote and 516 have been waiting for more than six months

The number of patients waiting to be operated on in Lanzarote has increased in relation to last year, while it has decreased in the Canary Islands as a whole. Specifically, as of December 2017, a total of 1,721 people were waiting to undergo surgery at the Molina Orosa Hospital, compared to 1,658 in the same month of 2016, that is, 63 more patients. 

Of the 1,721 on the surgical waiting list in Lanzarote, 516 have been there for more than six months, while the rest, 1,205 patients, have been waiting for less than half a year. As for the waiting time, on the other hand, it has decreased, going from 160.28 days to 156.1.

By medical specialties, Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery is the area that accumulates the most patients waiting to be operated on, a total of 791, of which 545 have been waiting for more than six months. It is followed by Ophthalmology, with 338 waiting to be operated on, all of them for less than six months. In Urology, there are 242 patients waiting to be operated on, of which 62 have been waiting for more than half a year; while in General and Digestive Surgery there are 230 in total, of which only three have been waiting for more than six months. To be operated on in Otorhinolaryngology, there are 73 people on the waiting list, two for more than half a year; for Gynecology there are 46, where they have been for more than six months, and for Dermatology only one patient for less than half a year. 

In the Canary Islands as a whole, according to the Minister of Health of the regional Executive, José Manuel Baltar, the surgical waiting list has been reduced by 5,649 people, 16.5% in relation to last year. 

 

Consultations and complementary tests 


As for the waiting list for consultations with medical specialties, it has also increased, going from 1,222 patients in December 2016 to 1,376 at the end of 2017, that is, it has increased by 154 people. 

In this case, the greatest collapse is recorded in rheumatology, with 196 patients on the waiting list. It is followed by traumatology and orthopedic surgery, with 176; dermatology, with 120; digestive system with 112; ophthalmology with 100; rehabilitation with 87; endocrinology with 78; pediatrics with 72; general and digestive surgery with 70; and otorhinolaryngology with 69. 

With less than 50 patients on the waiting list are allergy, with 45; cardiology with 43; neurology with 35, nephrology with 34; pulmonology with 32; urology with 28; internal medicine with 25; hematology with 14; and gynecology with 8.

As for the waiting list for complementary tests, there are 298 patients at the Molina Orosa Hospital, 291 waiting for an ultrasound, six for a CT scan and one for a mammogram.
