The Las Palmas Medical Association Foundation has awarded 77,000 euros in scholarships for research and training stays to 19 projects, including two doctors from Lanzarote, Martín García López and Eduardo García Díaz.

Both have been granted a team scholarship of 4,000 euros, which in the case of Eduardo García will be used for a Study on Gestational Diabetes and Neonatal Microcardiopathy, designed to investigate whether children of mothers with gestational diabetes more often have a widening of the heart during the first month of life.

In the case of Martín García, he will study patients who take Sintrom for presenting arrhythmias and are not well controlled, and who therefore have an indication for new generation anticoagulants. "We are going to assess what their characteristics are and what the results are when moving to the new treatment, in such a way that the result of the change in each specific patient can be assessed in advance," explains the Las Palmas Medical Association Foundation.

"Beneficial" advances for the medical community and for patients

Of the 19 Research and Stay (I+E) Scholarships 2018, eleven are for scientific research and seven for training in medical reference centers outside our Islands, all of them endowed with 4,000 euros. In addition, a Special Scholarship valued in this case at 5,000 euros has been granted. "The investigations worthy of a scholarship from the Foundation of the Medical Association are projects whose advances will not only be beneficial for the entire medical community of the province but also for patients and citizens," explained Esteban Pérez Alonso, vice president of the Medical Association of Las Palmas.

All the winners

The Dr. González Jaraba Special Research Scholarship has been awarded this year to the Inflammatory Cytokines in Ischemic Heart Disease 'O3Cardio' project, which obtained a high score, by Bernardino Clavo Varas. In addition to the excellence of the project, it is a research that addresses the treatment with Ozone of advanced heart diseases. Studies like this could provide an important benefit in the quality of life of patients and open new lines of research in ischemic heart disease and other chronic diseases," detailed the vice president of the College, Esteban Pérez Alonso. The Special Scholarship research is awarded 5,000 euros.

With a Research Scholarship, the individual projects of Ana Alicia Tejera Hernández, Roberto Fornell Pérez, Jaime Alberto Serna Gómez, Mª Teresa Gómez Casares, Emma de Lorenzo-Cáceres Morales and Aridane Cárdenes León have been awarded. In the awarded team investigations, the main researchers of each one, among which are the two doctors from Lanzarote, are Mª Victoria Sánchez Sánchez, Eduardo García Díaz, Sara Bisshop Alfonso, Marín García López and José Ricardo Redondas Marrero.

As for the projects awarded with a Stay Scholarship, which have also been recognized with a financial aid of 4,000? each, they will go to medical reference centers in different disciplines in India, Japan, the United States, Sweden, Canada and within Spain, in Salamanca or Madrid. In this edition, the scholarship holders will update knowledge on hand surgery, neuro-vascular pathology, advanced cardiac imaging, esophagogastric oncological surgery, extrahospital emergencies, breast reconstruction and health and lifestyle of single mothers in Spain and Europe.

With a Stay Scholarship in training, the members Mónica Francés Monasterio, Mª Asunción Acosta Mérida, Dailos José Rodríguez Betancor, Juan Lizandro Rodríguez Hernández, Sara Trujillo Alemán, Henar de las Heras González and Víctor Fuertes Bielsa were distinguished. "The excessive workload in hospitals or primary care services puts a spoke in the wheels of medicine to be up to date, it means a significant overexertion. Those who do not investigate are left behind very quickly, it is a risk that we cannot run. What they need is help," said Esteban Pérez Alonso, vice president of the College.

Encourage research and continuous training

In this sense, the Foundation of the Medical Association of Las Palmas makes "an important effort to promote, help and encourage members to investigate and to be in continuous training", according to Esteban Pérez, pointing out that the result of this are the 23 editions of the Research and Stay Scholarships.

The I+E Scholarships of the Foundation of the Medical Association of Las Palmas have been granted since 1995 "and are an important recognition in the medical community of the province", according to the same, which has also progressively increased, in the last four years, not only the economic amount of the scholarships, up to 140%, but also the scholarships themselves, which have gone from nine to the current 19.
