The town of Tiagua is celebrating, paying tribute once again to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The festivities officially kicked off on September 2nd, with the reading of the proclamation in memory of Petronila González Barreto, better known as "Tolila". This resident of Tiagua passed away in 1994 and it was her daughter, Araceli Cabrera González, who was in charge of reading the proclamation in her memory.

"Tolila" was born in Tiagua on May 8, 1926, and although she spent several years living in Gran Canaria, her neighbors emphasize that she "always had Tiagua present in her life." In fact, after the retirement of her husband, Manuel Cabrera López, she returned to her hometown.

There she carried out "various activities of a cultural nature, developing the work of theater direction and arrangement of works, basically costumbristas, destined to be represented by the people of the town, in the Socorro festivities." She also collaborated with the Teguise City Council, teaching sewing classes to young and old. In addition, "as a woman of faith and committed to the Community, she was a catechist, transmitting her values to the group she led."

Among her contributions to the town, the neighbors also remember that she made one of the mantles of the Virgen del Socorro, patron saint of Tiagua, and "always participated actively in all the events and activities of the town."

Activities for everyone

After the proclamation, the night of last Monday continued with a theatrical performance by the TMT group, with the play "Frangollo". During these days, several championships have also been held for children and adults, and this Friday, at 8:00 p.m., there will be a bingo to benefit the child Juan Aithamy Martín Wagner, who suffers from a nasofrontal tumor.

This Saturday, among other activities, another tribute will also take place, naming the sports courts after Pedro Ulises Cabrera Díaz, who was a member of the Timbayba folk group and a player for C.D. Tinajo. Saturday night will continue with performances by the La Pichona, Los Valles, El Geito and Pal Porrón parrandas.

On Monday, the religious procession will take place, accompanied by the Guanapay folk group, at 7:00 p.m. Finally, on September 13, a twinning of the town of Tiagua with the Tenerife town of Fasnia will be celebrated. On the occasion of this event, the groups El Puchero de Tenerife, Sentimiento Sureño de Tenerife and Los Salineros de la Hoya de Lanzarote will perform.
