A marginal world. A social problem. A complaint to the institutions. The report of the program "Callejeros", from Cuatro, which was broadcast on Friday, January 19, can be understood in different ways. A document that was about the world of drugs and was focused on Arrecife.
A hard report, with a background of social denunciation, although it also offered a partial image of Arrecife. Several drug addicts told how they lived, how long they had been consuming drugs and even how and at what price they sold them. Arrecife offered a sad picture in this report, since such significant sites as the Charco de San Ginés or the end of Calle Real were the scene of this document. So were the Rocar area, Calle Triana or Parque de Los Pinos.
From the institutions it is assured that there are different projects and programs to help all the people who need it. "But we cannot force anyone to leave that world," explains Lolina Curbelo, Councilor for Social Services of the Arrecife City Council. The councilor also comments that there is a great contact from her area with people who are undergoing detoxification treatments. "They call me very often because my mobile is always available to them".
Despite the wake-up call that this report supposes to the institution, the document has also captured a negative image of the capital of Lanzarote, especially if one takes into account that it is an island that has tourism as its main economic activity. Pedro San Ginés, counselor of the Tourism Board, explains that they are not going to initiate any type of measure to counteract this negative image "because we cannot become a media loudspeaker". "It is a problem that exists, that is there, and that we have to fight internally against it, but jointly between several institutions", he comments.
