The first of the courses, "Voice over IP (VoIP) with asterisk", began this Monday, at 5:00 p.m., in the Cicca room of Arrecife.

For its part, the University of La Laguna has focused its offer on courses on "Environmental, water and energy resources of Lanzarote", the "Geological paths and itineraries of Lanzarote", "Environmental Education and Sustainable Tourism", "Care of the premature child" and the "Psychological processes in the main health disorders".

In total there will be 10 courses taught in Lanzarote during the year 2010 by the two Canary Islands universities. This is already the thirteenth year that the Education and Culture area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the ULPGC and the ULL, offers the population of the island this educational program, aimed at expanding the training possibilities of the island's society. In the courses, although they are mainly aimed at university students, anyone interested in the subject matter can enroll.

Price and schedules

Each of the workshops will last for 20 teaching hours, which can be validated for free choice credits. The price is 40 euros for students, the unemployed and retirees and 50 euros for the rest of the population. They will be taught in the CICCA Room of Arrecife, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., from Monday to Friday, between February and May.

The presentation of the seminars was attended by the Councilor for Education and Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Francisco Cabrera, the Vice-Rector for Students and University Extension of the ULPGC, Nicolás Díaz de Lezcano Sevillano, and the Vice-Rector for University and Society Relations of the ULL, María Gracia Rodríguez Brito.

More studies, less unemployment

At the end of the presentation, the Councilor for Education and Culture of the Cabildo stated that "although the economic situation is not good for the Corporation, we have decided from the Department and from the Government group of the Cabildo to maintain the offer of the courses"

In this regard, Francisco Cabrera pointed out that "the data and statistics show that unemployment has less impact on people with studies, so this is not the time to reduce the educational offer."

"Lanzarote is the third island, after Gran Canaria and Tenerife, with the largest public study program and during this year we are going to maintain the entire offer, including the University of Seniors that begins today, the Open Classroom that we presented last week, and the 2010 Summer University, which will maintain the high level of previous years", indicated the Minister of Education
