The president of Las Kellys of Lanzarote, Miriam Barros Grosso, and the supervised apartment initiative of Mararía received their awards as 'Woman of the Year' last Friday, in the first edition of these awards granted by the Rotary Club of Costa Teguise.

"A sector such as that of the cleaning ladies, overexploited in many cases, with little or no visibility until now, has gained prominence this year and achieved labor and safety improvements that had been denied until now," said the president of the Rotarians of Costa Teguise, Eva Navarro, highlighting that "finally" in 2017 they became "visible to the whole society."

"And a voice has been heard above others in that struggle that has reached the Senate of the country, that of Miriam Barros Grosso," added Navarro. "From our club - regardless of whether we agree with her or not - we unanimously admire that work and, above all, we highlight that it has taken place from Lanzarote and, above all, her leadership capacity. To her, Miriam Barros, and to those who are with her, congratulations," she said.

"Ethical" entrepreneurs who "respect the conditions

Surrounded by a hundred colleagues from Las Kellys, some even traveling from Gran Canaria, Miriam Barros received the award from the secretary of the Club, María Gracia Lanzas, and explained in a very emotional speech the personal reasons that led her to participate in the defense of the cleaning ladies and give visibility to this group, "forgotten for years by the unions".

Miriam Barros also wanted to highlight "the work of ethical entrepreneurs who respect the conditions." "We receive their support and encouragement against those who do not respect labor regulations and thus carry out unfair competition," said the president of Las Kellys of Lanzarote, who also referred to part of her biography. With a Spanish father and a Uruguayan mother, she spoke of her combative childhood with her parents in trade union matters.

On the other hand, the Rotary Club of Costa Teguise has awarded the work of the Mararía Association and its Supervised Apartment initiative for abused women with minor children in their care. An initiative that is once again being established this year in Lanzarote, as explained by the president of the association, Nieves Rosa Hernández, who collected the award, which includes a financial endowment to contribute to the project. The treasurer of the club, Rosario Foiquinos, was in charge of delivering the check.
