The opening of the Piracy Museum, located in the Guanapay Castle, in Teguise, has increased the influx of visitors to this fortress by 38 percent. This has been assured by the Culture Councilor of the Teguise City Council, Oswaldo Betancort, who has indicated that between February 25 and April 30, 2010, 4,700 visitors to the Immigrant Museum, which was located in this castle, were counted, while in the same period of 2011 the entrance of 6,500 people has been registered, thanks to the recent opening of the Piracy Museum.
The councilor has indicated that two weeks ago the visit of the students of the island's schools began. "This new phase has a lot of acceptance, because the subject attracts minors a lot and also, both primary and secondary school students work with the museum catalog previously in the educational centers," he said.
"The students come with specific questions and already have approximate knowledge of what they are going to see. Each group makes a guided tour with explanation of each of the museum's rooms," the councilor specified. The visit is interactive because the students have to participate in the reading of texts. Also, at the end of the route "they continue to enjoy the theme since they play games of fortress, pirates, slaves or ships, among other activities, on the esplanade of the Castle", according to the Teguise City Council in a statement.
The museum management has advanced that it already has more than 1,200 students enrolled during the month of May.
