The Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has recently implanted a neurostimulator with the collaboration of the prestigious Italian specialist Giuliano De Carolis, head of the Pain Unit of the University Hospital of Pisa and president of the Italian Pain Society.

The intervention, scheduled by the head of the Pain Unit of Molina Orosa, María del Mar Domínguez, and in which De Carolis participated, consisted of the implantation of the Neurimpulse stimulator in a patient with chronic pain derived from the amputation of several fingers of her hand.

As detailed by the Ministry of Health, this type of stimulator is indicated for the treatment of chronic peripheral nerve pain and is an electrode that is implanted under the patient's skin close to the nerves that cause the pain and generates electrical signals that help to considerably reduce the pain and replace it with a pleasant sensation.

“These signals travel through the nerves, masking the sensation of pain, so patients sometimes perceive it as a gentle massage and others as a tingling sensation,” explains De Carolis.

This is a personalized pain relief therapy that allows the patient to adjust the intensity of the stimulation using a portable control and, in addition, can establish different levels of stimulation at different times of the day, thus achieving a significant improvement in the quality of life of patients with chronic pain.

The Management of Health Services of Lanzarote describes these collaborations with renowned specialists such as Giuliano De Carolis as very positive, a professional recognized for his medical experience and for his teaching activity at the universities of Parma and Florence and at the Italian Institute of Algological Sciences, as well as for his information and dissemination initiatives in the field of pain medicine.
