The Los Dolores festivities were officially inaugurated this Wednesday night. The person in charge of kicking off this year was Inés Rojas. The former Councilor of the Government of the Canary Islands gave her proclamation late Wednesday afternoon at the doors of the Los Dolores hermitage, in an act presented by Radio Lanzarote colleague Francisco José Navarro. With the words of the speaker, a new edition of the island's most popular festival began.
Rojas was supported by various political authorities, such as the president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, the mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, the general secretary of CC on the island, David de la Hoz, and other party colleagues and municipal representatives, such as the mayor of Haría, Marciano Acuña. Also attending were the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, the mayor of Arrecife, José Montelongo, and the island director of Education, Mario Pérez.
The mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín, has defined the proclamation of the former Minister of Housing and Social Affairs of the regional government in the last legislature as "very emotional". Inés Rojas, who was interrupted by applause from the public on several occasions, guided those present on a journey through her life, narrating how she fought from when she was a girl in the small town of Soo to achieve her goals. She spoke of great joys such as the births of her daughters or her efforts and commitment to becoming a teacher. Her status as a woman and the difficulties and disadvantages that women faced in her youth and continue to face today colored her speech.
"To you, Virgin of Los Dolores, to you woman, to you mother, who knows well how difficult life has been and is for many women. You who know how many "volcanoes" we have had to deal with throughout history to occupy a place in it, allow me, as the proclaimer of your festival, to beg you to help us get rid of these volcanoes of today. You know that I know that miracles exist. Let's work together for it," Rojas concluded.
With her words, the festival program began, which will have its high point in the traditional pilgrimage, which will be held this Saturday. At the same time, this Friday also marks the beginning of the Island Craft Fair, which will bring together almost a hundred artisans from the island and the archipelago, as well as those from the peninsula and other countries.
