The Hemodynamics and Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has already exceeded 200 interventions since its launch last September. Specifically, 206 catheterizations have been performed, 128 diagnostic and 78 therapeutic.
The new facilities and equipment of the Hospital have also led to various interventions such as the implantation of twenty-three definitive pacemakers and the care of several cases of infarction code, which have avoided the transfer of patients to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín and that managed to save the lives of those people.
The implementation of this unit allows patients to be operated on in Lanzarote without having to travel to Gran Canaria to be treated.
Likewise, the hemodynamics room has facilitated the realization of other procedures of the Cardiology specialty that until now were not performed in Molina Orosa. This is the case of the recent implantation of an automatic cardioverter defibrillator for the primary prevention of sudden death.
Cardiac and coronary interventionism
Since the launch of the Hemodynamic Cardiology Unit, patients with coronary pathology in Lanzarote are treated in this service, which develops various procedures such as the diagnosis and percutaneous treatment of patients with cardiological processes, such as heart disease, vascular conditions, arrhythmias and blockages, as well as other treatments in the cardiovascular system.
It should be noted that the new facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that allows cardiac and coronary interventionism, as well as continuous monitoring of the patient, an essential process to guarantee the safety and success of the procedure.
This new room has led to the creation of a telemetry and cardiac monitoring space, which is equipped with four beds in the hospitalization area and which, through a team specifically trained for this, guarantees continuous monitoring of patients undergoing treatment until they are discharged.
The team of specialists in hemodynamic cardiology at the Lanzarote hospital has been supported since the beginning of its activity by those responsible for Hemodynamics and interventional Cardiology at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín.
Equipment and humanization
The new Hemodynamics Unit has meant a qualitative leap in the care of patients with cardiac and coronary pathology. With an area of two hundred square meters, it is conceived as a multipurpose and multifunctional room equipped with cutting-edge technology.
The operating room equipment has a digitized X-ray arch, which offers high-resolution images and allows the three-dimensional reconstruction of organs, as well as a polygraph to review electrophysiological and arrhythmia procedures. It is also equipped with safety devices for basic and advanced life support.
Likewise, and within the humanization project of Molina Orosa, the walls of the room have been decorated with a vinyl that recreates the volcanic landscape of southern Lanzarote, exactly the one observed between the town of Yaiza and El Golfo, installed by the company Siemens.
Cardiology Service
The Cardiology service of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital attended a total of 5,806 consultations in 2023 and performed nearly 14,000 diagnostic tests, including electrocardiograms and echocardiograms.
The team has eight cardiologists, three of them hemodynamists, and a large team of nurses and nursing care technicians who attend to functional tests, the hemodynamics room itself and the heart failure consultation.
