The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) has "strongly" condemned the "disproportionate" action of the Spanish Navy against Greenpeace activists in Canary waters, in front of the ‘Rowan Renaissance’ oil platform, which ended this Saturday with a woman seriously injured and two other minor injuries.

In a statement sent this Monday, the Foundation recalls that the volunteers of the ‘Arctic Sunrise’ intended to denounce the imminent start by Repsol of deep-water explorations off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, "supporting the feeling of the institutions and broad sectors of the population of the islands."

The Foundation rejects "the use of violence exercised by the Government of Spain through the Navy, endangering the lives of environmental activists who were trying to peacefully protest the soundings and defend the ecological, economic and social interests of the Canary Islands, threatened by Repsol."

In addition, the FCM thanks the environmental association Greenpeace "for its work and its defense of the waters and the environmental and socio-economic heritage of the citizens of the Canary Islands", while wishing a "speedy recovery" to Matilda Brunetti, the volunteer injured during the serious incident.
