The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a resource attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has installed the first of the adapted bathrooms for ostomized people that the hospital will have.
The new service, located in the Outpatient Consultation area on the second floor, responds to the "humanization process" and aims to make the stay of all patients "more comfortable", as reported by the service.
Characteristics
The new bathroom makes it easier for people with stomas to change or empty their bags in a hygienic way, thus helping to improve their quality of life.
These users need to empty their bag regularly to avoid contracting infections and need a specially prepared area that is comfortable, hygienic and with the necessary characteristics. The new space, set up in an existing bathroom in the hospital, has all the necessary elements to facilitate this task.
For its part, the installation of the other bathrooms is initially planned in the area of the Oncology and Hematology Day hospitals.
46 ostomies in 2022
The Molina Orosa surgery service performed a total of 46 ostomies last year, a surgical procedure in which an opening is made in the abdominal wall to allow an organ, such as the intestinal or urinary tract, to exit as a result of various pathologies.
The Lanzarote hospital has a consultation for ostomized people, given that the quality of life of these patients depends, to a large extent, on their access to specialized medical and nursing care.
