The General Directorate of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) celebrated this Wednesday, June 11, the provincial event on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day on the island of Lanzarote. During this day, tribute was paid to the most outstanding blood, apheresis, and plasma donors of the island territory, as well as to various entities, collaborators, and companies that have demonstrated their commitment to promoting donation.
Among the donors distinguished for their solidarity and collaboration are Mario Brito, with 60 donations made; Raquel Vega, with 38; Marco Antonio Guerrero, with 39 apheresis donations and a total of 52 donations; Jorge González, with 14 donations; and Gloria del Carmen Guadalupe Armas, with 13 donations.
In addition, the involvement of different sectors such as business, health, sports, and education was valued, as well as the work of associations linked to patients receiving blood products.
World Blood Donor Day
Under the slogan Donate blood, donate hope: together we save lives, the World Health Organization (WHO) pays general tribute to the millions of voluntary and unpaid blood donors around the world, who offer a new opportunity of life to those who need it. This day not only celebrates the solidarity of these donors, but also underlines the importance of maintaining a constant and safe flow of blood and plasma donations through regular extractions.
It seeks to foster a culture of commitment, solidarity, and community through blood donation, highlighting the direct impact that these actions have on the lives of patients.
Lanzarote Donation Data 2025
The results obtained in Lanzarote during the first five months of 2025 are very encouraging. Thanks to the institutional collaboration between the General Directorate of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy and the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its Corporate Social Responsibility unit, blood donations have increased by 15.92% between January 1 and May 31 of this year, compared to the same period of the previous year. Likewise, the performance of collections has grown by 21.28 percent compared to 2024.
These data support the common effort "that has been carried out between both public institutions", as they defend in a statement.
