The mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, announced this Wednesday, on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, "surprises" for the celebration of the 600 years of history of La Villa. Among them, he revealed that the Royal House has been invited to the commemoration of this event for next year, although there is still no confirmation of whether the Kings of Spain will attend or not.
The events to commemorate the 600 years of history of La Villa will start next week, specifically on the 15th, and will extend until November 15, 2018. "We are going to try to do 600 events," Betancort pointed out, who also said that, among them, actions will be taken to highlight the heritage, as has already been done with the cemetery, and "illustrious people who have contributed their grain of sand to make Teguise a benchmark today will be recognized."
"We are talking, for example, about Alfonso Spínola. In March we are going to Uruguay, we are received by the president of Uruguay, because he was a very prominent doctor there, he cured smallpox in Uruguay, and I think we have to give recognition to both him and his family," Betancort pointed out, "The same thing we did with Leandro Perdomo, we are going to do with Clavijo y Fajardo, which we already did in Berlin, who was the chronicler and the technician of the Historical Archive and with Ángel Guerra we are also going to do a conference," he added.
The history of Teguise, a subject in the unitary schools
The mayor also announced that there will be a christening of airplanes with the name of Teguise before the end of the year, which according to what has been confirmed from the City Council will be from the company CanaryFly, that an agreement will be signed with the ONCE so that La Villa will star in a coupon, that there will be a National Lottery draw in Teguise, and that the Government of the Canary Islands will make the study of the history of Teguise compulsory in the unitary schools of the Canary Islands". "We are going to sign it in December with the counselor," said Oswaldo Betancort, thus pointing out "a fun year, of recognition" and in which he would like to "involve society, cultural, sports groups, and all residents." "Because it is a pride to belong to this municipality," he added.
"The luck that La Villa has had is losing the capital, because urbanism did not enter La Villa, it is intact. Within the bad, urban speculation did not enter, the town has remained almost intact and that is today our greatness, our bulwark," said the mayor, who also described as "luck" that he has had to celebrate the 600 years of history of Teguise.
