The Rotarians of Lanzarote renew their board of directors. Otilia Aguilar Topham will assume the presidency of the Rotary Club Lanzarote during the institutional event that will take place this Saturday, July 9, at 9 p.m., in the halls of the Hotel Beatriz in Costa Teguise. The event will be attended by authorities, representatives of the social, cultural and economic sectors, and Rotarians from different islands and the Peninsula. Oti Aguilar, until her pre-retirement, has been professionally linked to the commercial team of the airline Iberia in its delegation in Lanzarote.
The current president of the Rotarians of Lanzarote, the industrialist Marcial Cabrera Lemes, will cede the presidency to Aguilar Topham, who will be accompanied on her board of directors by Ana María Oncina, as secretary; the industrialist Marcial Pérez de León, treasurer; Udo Dadlani, the well-known businessman and precursor of the Hindu bazaars on the Island, will be the macer; the director of SH Seguridad en Canarias and former vice president of the Unión Deportiva Lanzarote, Rafael Montero, will be responsible for the Rotary Foundation. Knut Folstad will assume the international relations of the Club. The journalist Severino Betancort; the industrialist Benito Ruíz and Germán Alpuín, with a degree in Labor Relations, will be other members of the new board of directors of this philanthropic and humanitarian association, which, as in Lanzarote, is present in nearly 200 countries through more than 30,000 clubs.
Since the creation of Rotary Club Lanzarote, in 1992, they have collaborated with different humanitarian initiatives. The Rotarians have helped different groups and families on the island. Thus, they have donated the therapeutic pool and gymnasium of Adislan, in Tahíche; they have acquired and donated a 9-seater van for El Cribo, and others for Afacoda (Association of Relatives against Drugs in Arrecife). In these months they have actively helped Calor y Café and Cáritas in their soup kitchens and have allocated nearly 50,000 euros for the Association of Relatives and Sufferers of Alzheimer's in Lanzarote. In addition, the Red Cross has several adapted chairs and a medicalized ambulance, thanks to the collaboration of Rotary, among other groups and NGOs. Recently they have collaborated, in part, in the donation of a special vehicle to the young paraplegic Francisco Javier Roldán Padrón
20th anniversary
During this new Rotary year (from July 1 to June 30, 2012) Rotary Club Lanzarote will carry out different projects to commemorate the 20 years of Rotary in Lanzarote.
This solidarity and cultural club, made up of prominent professionals and businessmen from the Island, has been chaired by the former parliamentarian and businessman Patrocinio Barambio; by the lawyer, former parliamentarian and first government delegate in the democratic stage in Lanzarote, Juan Jesús González (now deceased); by the current general manager of the hotel chain Beatriz Hoteles and secretary of the tourism employers' association of Lanzarote (Asolan), Manuel Concepción Pérez; and by the journalist Severino A. Betancort.
The Head of Internal Medicine of the Hospital Molina Orosa, Dr. Abelardo Pérez; and the businessmen Ventura Acuña, Germán Alpuín, Joseph Hassan, Rafael Montero (former vice president of UD Lanzarote), Antonio Hernández and Rafael Medina, have also held the presidency of Rotary Club Lanzarote over the last few years, among others.
Otilia Aguilar Topham, linked to one of the families with the greatest teaching and philanthropic dedication on the Island, is the granddaughter of the former mayor of Arrecife and beloved historical teacher Adolfo Topham Martinón, and of Otilia Díaz (both with streets dedicated in the capital of Lanzarote
