The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has updated this Wednesday, September 10, the situation of the Territorial Emergency Plan of Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA), which goes from pre-alert to alert from 6:00 p.m., due to an episode of marine pollution on the island of Lanzarote.

The incident originated after the grounding and subsequent fire of a fishing boat in the shallows of an area of Órzola. As a consequence, a spill occurred in the sea that led to the activation of the National Maritime Plan, first in the alert phase and later in the emergency phase, in situation 1, from 3:30 p.m.

The affected territorial area corresponds to the coastline of the municipality of Haría, where control and assessment of the extent of the contamination are already being carried out.

The authorities insist on the importance of maintaining vigilance over the evolution of the emergency, while coordinating actions between the different administrations to mitigate possible environmental damage on the north coast of Lanzarote.
