The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Biosphere Reserve Office, carried out an awareness and sensitization campaign with the environment, aimed at 1,572 students from 13 different educational centers on the Island. The project was developed from November 15 to January 29, and consisted of 80 actions and talks coordinated by the Reserve Office.
The councilor responsible for the area, Ariagona González, points out that the objective of the project was to "sensitize and teach students the importance of the declaration of Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve since 1993, which has contributed to the fundamental balance between development and nature, the danger of plastic pollution for the environment or the importance of keeping the natural environments and landscapes of the Island clean".
In this sense, González appreciates the active cooperation of the 13 educational centers involved in this project, which, "despite the difficulties involved in the health crisis, have maintained their commitment and have worked to adapt the contents and spaces to this new reality, in order to guarantee the safety of the teaching staff and the students".
The educational projects of the Biosphere Reserve Office
Within the 80 talks and actions given in the framework of this campaign, these are divided into five main themes, with talks about the beginnings of Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve, the campaign against the problem of microplastics called 'Microplastics: an invisible problem, a global problem', the 'Zero Plastic' campaign, 'Training Actions, Without a Trace, in Natural Environments of the Island', Marine Biodiversity and 'Lanzarote, the importance of the landscape'.
Throughout the school year, the Alcalde Rafael Cedrés, San Juan, Playa Honda, Argana Alta, La Garita and Ajei schools, and the Arenas Internacional, Blas Cabrera Felipe, Puerto del Carmen, Tinajo, Teguise, Altavista and Playa Honda institutes participated in this initiative.
Secondly, within the line of educational action of the Biosphere Reserve office, and through the awareness campaigns aimed at secondary education centers on the island, the project 'Basuraleza "The Footprint of Ignorance"' was carried out, through the 'Papacría 2.0' geolocation application, carrying out actions aimed at raising awareness among students about the great global problem of abandoned garbage in our environment.
The 'Biosphere Schools' project, which this year included thirteen schools, began, as a pilot, in 2015, with the aim of implementing actions in the schools of the Island, in order to accompany the transition initiated towards a model of sustainable school committed to the social and environmental development of the Lanzarote community.
With the students of the Biosphere Schools, workshops are held to work on the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, developed by the United Nations Development Program, where each unit will work on one of these goals.
Finally, 'Water Treasure of Life' is a pilot project of oral and artistic narration designed with the purpose of bringing to the educational centers of the Island, and especially to the students of the first cycle of primary school, an awareness-raising activity on the use and value of water in Lanzarote
