Puerto del Carmen will start 2015 celebrating its "golden wedding" as the first tourist area of Lanzarote. To commemorate it, the City Council of Tías, through the Departments of Tourism and Festivities, has launched a series of activities and special events. The celebration will begin with the New Year's Eve party and will culminate with a fireworks display.
The party will take place in El Varadero square, next to La Tiñosa and will start at 11:30 p.m. on December 31. Several musical performances, DJs and party favors will be the ingredients for neighbors and tourists to say goodbye to the last minutes of 2014 and welcome 2015. A special security device will be deployed on this night in which the presence of about 40,000 people is expected. Attendees will be able to see later how the fires illuminate the Playa Grande of Puerto del Carmen.
So that there is no obstacle to the party, the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, signed a municipal decree on December 23 authorizing, under decree 86/2013 of August 1, to grant the extension of two hours of the time determined for the closing of establishments that have the mandatory license and municipal enabling title. This authorization was already applied during the night of December 25, and will also be in force in the early morning of this January 1 and next January 6.
The beginning of the year will be the starting gun for the commemoration of the 50 years of Puerto del Carmen as the first tourist center of Lanzarote. The fishing village of La Tiñosa gave rise in 1965 to the birth of the first tourist urbanization on the island of Los Volcanes. The well-known promoters and investors Vicente Calderón, former president of the Atlético de Madrid soccer club, and the Canarian businessman Virgilio Suárez, laid the foundation for the tourist development of Lanzarote, building in Puerto del Carmen the Playa Blanca urbanization, where the Hotel Los Fariones and the Barracuda Shopping Center would be located.
