Maruja Machín, a well-known pastry chef in Lanzarote, passed away at the age of 90 this Thursday in Villa de Teguise. The Teguise native was well recognized on the island for running a family pastry shop, where she sold famous meat pies. A lady who dedicated her whole life to the family business, Panadería Machín, and carried it forward with her children and her husband.

"Nobody made the pies like she did," revealed Paco Hernández, official chronicler of Teguise and regular customer of the pastry shop. A quality in the products that all the Teguise residents who came to the establishment every day appreciated. She was a very "considerate and appreciated" person by all Lanzarote residents, Hernández highlighted.

Her roscos, shortbreads, and cakes were responsible for sweetening the residents of La Villa de Teguise during the 71 years she was at the service of the pastry shop.

As María José Tabar collects in Historias de Teguise, Machín arrived at the family bakery at six in the morning. She dedicated herself more to shortbreads, buns, and roscos, while inviting tourists who peeked through the door of the pastry shop to come in and take photos, of whom she said were "goledores" (sweet tooths).
