The residents of Maneje have demanded an immediate solution to the slopes of the Arrecife Ring Road, something they have been requesting for more than a year. Faced with the lack of institutional response, they are considering going to the Prosecutor's Office. "If we don't have a solution in 15 days, we are going to file a complaint against the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo and the Arrecife City Council," Enrique Elvira, spokesperson for the neighborhood monitoring commission for the Ring Road works, said this Tuesday on Radio Lanzarote.
Elvira is willing to go to the Prosecutor's Office because if "a misfortune occurs" in the area, "no one will be responsible." This resident has warned of the "dangerous" slopes that exist in this area of the road, where landslides have already occurred. "The slopes are constantly falling and there has been no rain or wind," he insisted. "They have removed seven or eight trucks of debris that have fallen. They do it at night so that what is happening is not seen," he stated.
This resident believes that "if it rains and measures are not taken beforehand, there will be a misfortune there." "Not only are the slopes as they are, but Avenida de Los Geranios is completely in the air. If water falls, it will collapse. It seems that this is not of interest, but the rain is just around the corner and that is our fear," he warned. Elvira has assured that the technicians "agree" with the residents regarding the "danger" of the slopes of the Ring Road. "There are serious and very dangerous deficiencies."
This citizen doesn't even remember how many times he has held meetings with political officials to demand a solution to the slopes of the Ring Road. In this sense, he recalled that the first request was made in 2013. "We are finishing 2014 and we are still in the same situation. They haven't paid any attention to us," he lamented.
Multiple meetings but no solution
Specifically, this commission has met with the mayor of Arrecife, Manolo Fajardo Feo, "on many occasions", although not for three months, since he is "always busy". He has also held meetings with the Minister of the Government of the Canary Islands, Domingo Berriel, who "promised in the mayor's office that he would correct this situation, but everything remains the same." "The councilor of the Cabildo, José Antonio Gutiérrez, has always been available to the coordinator and we have also met with San Ginés, but the solutions do not arrive," he stated.
Elvira has especially criticized the general director of Road Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands, Juan Medina, whom he has accused of "deceiving all of Lanzarote." "In front of the mayor of Arrecife, the councilor Gutiérrez and the technicians, he promised that in June he would come and look for a solution. I am still waiting for this to happen. It is a real joke," he denounced.
Precisely, this resident, along with other affected parties, sent a letter to Medina in June of this year, in which he already warned that in the event that the letter "was filed without responding" to the demands of the neighborhood, he would file "the corresponding complaint with the Prosecutor's Office."
Elvira also has criticisms for the parliamentarians of Lanzarote. In September 2013, he met with seven of the eight parliamentarians, since Inés Rojas (CC) did not attend, as he pointed out. A year after this meeting, this resident has assessed it as follows: "Practically ignored." In this sense, he explained that he only had "response" from Fabián Martín (PIL) and Astrid Pérez (PP), with whom the monitoring commission contacted. "From the rest of the parliamentarians, regretting it very much, we have never heard from them again. They promised to take a petition to Parliament and nothing, absolutely nothing."
Therefore, due to the "impotence that the residents have" in not yet finding a solution, they plan to go to the Courts. "We have no other choice. We are not willing to let a misfortune happen," Elvira insisted.
