Lanzarote will be on red alert this Wednesday due to high temperatures

The State Meteorological Agency and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands have declared the maximum alert for high temperatures in Lanzarote and the rest of the Canary Archipelago for this Wednesday, August 26.

Temperatures are expected to reach 37ºC , especially affecting inland areas of the islands, midlands and coasts of the west, southeast and south. In addition, the meteorological phenomenon will also be accompanied by haze. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the temperatures will be around 40ºC in the central hours of the day.

From the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, it is recalled what the measures and health recommendations that should be adopted are:

Health recommendations

Drink plenty of water or fluids without waiting to be thirsty, unless there is a medical contraindication. Avoid alcoholic and very sugary drinks.

Avoid sun exposure during the hours of greatest heat intensity (between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.), preferably doing so before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

In the hottest hours, stay in the coolest areas of homes or residences, or, if applicable, place ventilation or air conditioning devices, or, as a last resort, use fresh damp cloths or take a shower.

Avoid sports activities, excursions or outdoor visits during the hottest hours. Carry out these activities in the early hours of the day, in the late hours of the afternoon or at night; they should protect themselves from the sun and drink plenty of drinks that replenish fluids and mineral salts (juices, isotonic drinks, water, etc.).

Eat light meals that help replenish the salts lost through sweat (salads, fruits, vegetables, gazpachos or juices).

If you have to go outside, try to be in the shade, wear light and light-colored clothing, protecting yourself from the sun with hats or caps and approved sunglasses. Use fresh, comfortable and breathable shoes.

Be careful with medications, especially those that should be in the refrigerator for proper storage.

Always maintain the cold chain of food

In the event of presenting any symptomatology associated with heat such as headaches, dizziness, cramps, general malaise, sensation of heatstroke due to heat fatigue or exhaustion, contact 112.

Other preventive plans in the Canary Islands

In the event of a situation of maximum temperatures, the Government of the Canary Islands may activate this Plan for the Prevention of the Effects of High Temperatures on People's Health, with a health risk warning, as well as its Specific Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Care of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands for Risks due to Adverse Weather Phenomena (PEFMA), through the declaration of alert due to a situation of risk for the population, property and the environment.
