Nearly 500 seniors from the seven municipalities of Lanzarote attended on Tuesday afternoon the first Island Meeting of Elders in the Plaza de El Varadero, in La Tiñosa. This initiative, which is held for the first time, was organized by the City Council of Tías within the program of the festivities of Puerto del Carmen.
The City Council of Tías counted for the organization of this playful meeting for the elderly with the support and collaboration of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the departments of elders of the seven conejeros city councils. These nearly 500 people traveled from their respective municipalities in buses to the Plaza de El Varadero, where they could enjoy a snack and the performances of the orchestras Los Bajip of La Gomera and Los Jarvac.
The elders were able to dance to the rhythms and songs of these classic orchestras, famous in the verbeneros circuits of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands in the 70s and 80s of the last century XX.

The attendees to this first Island Meeting of Elders were received by the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, and the councilman of Fiestas, Francisco Javier Aparicio, who emphasized that this playful initiative aims to promote coexistence and companionship among the elders of the Island, regardless of the municipality where they reside, to enjoy in an atmosphere of joy and fun.
In this meeting were present accompanying each municipal delegation of elders the respective mayors or councilors of Elders or Social Services. For the municipality of Tías, in addition to its mayor and councilman of Fiestas, attended the deputy mayor, Amado Jesús Vizcaíno, and the councilor of Elders and Social Welfare and the Family, Aroa Pérez.
Rock Nights
Puerto del Carmen will continue these days celebrating its patron saint festivities. From this Wednesday and until Sunday, the main one has more than 40 different activities to enjoy.

After the performance of the Valencian group BombaI and the Argentine singer and composer Coti, or the rhythmic night of the Zumba Night Disco held this past Monday, rock will be the protagonist in the nights of this Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 in the Plaza de El Varadero.
The Canarian bands Boulevard and Sin Complejo will perform on Wednesday night, starting at 9:30 pm, while on Thursday, at the same time, will perform La Frontera, mythical Spanish rock group created in 1984 by and led by Javier Andreu (Voice), Tony Marmota (Bass), José Bataglio (Drums), Quino Maqueda (Guitar) and Rafa Hernández (Guitar).

This group was known at first as Las Muñecas Repollo, name that was soon replaced by the title of one of the first songs, 'La Frontera' at the suggestion of rock critic Jesús Ordová. They will rumble the Plaza de El Varadero in the festivities in honor of the Virgen del Carmen from 21:30 hours.

One of the cultural proposals with which the City Council of Tías innovates in the programming of the festivities of Puerto del Carmen in this 2018 will arrive to the streets of La Tiñosa also this Thursday, from 18:30 hours, with the cultural proposal 'Walking through the bottom of the sea', a family theater circus through all the interior streets of Puerto del Carmen, by the company Delirantes.
On the other hand, at 20:40 hours, the halls of El Fondeadero will host the presentation of the book '600 years of history. The British connection with Lanzarote and the Canary Islands' by Larry Yaskiel, journalist and resident of La Tiñosa who was manager in the 60s and 70s of one of the great multinational record companies.
Maritime procession, music and fireworks as the end of the festivities
The program of the festivities of Puerto del Carmen will live the weekend its biggest days with the maritime and land processions. As a preview, on Friday will be tasted the most multitudinous sancocho that every year has its appointment with the festivities of La Tiñosa. A sancocho that is elaborated by the neighbors of this fishing enclave and is offered to the assistants by the municipal representatives who help the neighbors in its distribution and distribution in rations accompanied by potatoes, sweet potatoes and Canarian mojo.
The morning of Saturday will be the regatta of the jolateros, an activity very linked to the coastal history of La Tiñosa and Lanzarote. In the night, after the maritime procession with the image of the Virgen del Carmen, will take place the concert of 600 and Los Lola at 21:30 hours.
The end of the party will be on Sunday. At noon, and after the land procession in honor of the Virgen del Carmen, will take place the youth concert of the Última Llave, while at 21 hours will perform los Jóvenes Cantadores. The night will close at 23 hours with a fireworks display over the sky of Puerto del Carmen.
