The UV radiation index has increased this Thursday in Lanzarote and is expected to continue to do so in the coming days, reaching an "extremely high" level over the weekend. Therefore, the Security and Emergency Consortium has warned the population to take precautionary measures if they are going to expose themselves to the sun during these days.
Specifically, a radiation index of 10 is expected this Thursday and Friday, classified as "very high". In addition, from the weekend and at least until Monday, it is expected to increase to 11, placing it at an "extremely high" level. This means that exposure to the sun without protection can be "harmful to health".
The Consortium recommends being especially careful when exposing yourself to the sun if you have a large number of moles, irregular moles or large moles; that you have freckles or a tendency to burn; or that you have fair skin or blond, red or light brown hair.
If you are going to spend time outdoors, it is recommended to wear clothing that protects the skin as much as possible and does not let light through, as well as wide hats that also cover the neck and suitable sunglasses.
In addition, the convenience of using sunscreen with an SPF of 15, at a minimum, is recalled. The Consortium recalls that an SPF 15 blocks 93 percent of the UV rays that cause burns; while an SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of those rays. Products with the label 'broad spectrum' block UVB and UVA radiation, which are the ones that can cause skin cancer.
