Lanzarote joins the NAC (No To Hunting) Platform demonstration. Every year, and in more and more places, the rejection of hunting and the damage caused to thousands of animals is shown this activity right in this month, coinciding with the end of the hunting season with greyhounds, when more than 50,000 dogs of this breed are 'discarded' each year. In Lanzarote, the demonstration will take place at the Arrecife Fairgrounds at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 5.
Some animals, along with many others, for whom the NAC Platform and hundreds of shelters and animal protection entities demand a law to protect them. Therefore, this year, in addition to the demands for the prohibition of hunting and all its consequences on wild animals and the environment, special emphasis is placed on the controversial law on Protection, rights and welfare of animals, "A law that should serve to protect all animals equally, and especially the most vulnerable, harassed, abused and abandoned, the animals used in hunting activities," they explain from the platform.
The 2023 call is the largest to date, convening demonstrations in 44 Spanish cities and eleven international ones on February 5 at 12 noon (peninsular time). From the main capitals to smaller cities, five German cities, three French cities, Zurich (Switzerland), The Hague (Netherlands) and Warsaw (Poland) are also joining. From the NAC Platform it is explained that, although the massive abandonment of hunting dogs begins in October, February is especially tragic. According to the Affinity Foundation study, the end of the hunting season is the main reason for dog abandonment in Spain. "To these data we must add the dogs abandoned during and before the start of the hunting season, our calculations are of more than 114,000 dogs abandoned each year, coming from hunting," they indicate.
Law on protection, rights and welfare of animals
From NAC, it is explained that they have been asking for a State Animal Protection Law that protects all animals since the beginning of the platform. "Not only hunting dogs, not only companion dogs and not only dogs", they insist. "The law that was presented -comment from the platform that brings together more than 300 entities- is a step, but it is not even close to what we would like it to be, since, apart from prohibiting pigeon shooting or silviculture, it should also prohibit hunting with dogs, both from rehala for being wild and throwing dogs into a fierce fight against wild animals and any animal that crosses, often leaving dogs injured and dead and generating attacks on livestock or companion animals, such as hunting with greyhounds and other breeds that are the main reason for the abandonment and mistreatment of animals in Spain. Creating in these animals a continuous helplessness and suffering in search of the champion dog".
The entity convening the demonstrations warns that, according to studies, the rejection of hunting does not stop increasing. They are based on studies such as the one carried out by BBVA to highlight that the acceptance score on the sport hunting of animals on a scale of 0 to 10 is 1.7. The study carried out last October by the company Ipsos 'Awareness of Spanish society regarding animal rights' reveals data such as that 92% of those surveyed see the need to implement legislation that protects animals. 83% want to toughen penalties for animal abuse and 69% see the need to protect wild animals from abuse. In addition, of the people asked by the survey, 73% want to preserve the rights of animals used for hunting and 79% are in favor of prohibiting cockfights, pigeon shooting.
