May 3rd, the feast of the Holy Cross, is a very important date in the calendar of many towns in the Canary archipelago. One of the main events that takes place is the adorning of the crosses, the decoration of them with flowers.

With the celebration of the Day of the Cross, it is time to remember the importance that this symbol has had on the island of Lanzarote and the different forms and meanings with which they are presented in various spaces of the island territory.

Without a doubt, in Lanzarote, it takes a prominent role in La Villa de Teguise, where cultural groups, on the eve of the day, are in charge of adorning the 14 wooden crosses that are scattered in different streets and buildings of the Historic Site of La Villa, each representing the stations of the Via Crucis, which Jesus Christ traveled to reach Calvary.

Also in Arrecife, the Cross of the Century is a cultural religious reference point located on the Islote del Francés, dating from 1899, a place where many citizens, women and men, come every year to deposit their bouquets of flowers and silently say a prayer for their families, keeping in mind those who died at sea.

In Lanzarote, we can find many more crosses in each of the seven municipalities crowning some of the mountains where the residents climb on such a special day to adorn them.
