Lanzarote residents allocate an average of 32% of their income to pay rent, according to figures published by the Data Center of the Cabildo, based on a report prepared by the newspaper El País with data from the CPI and the Family Budget Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics.
According to these data, Yaiza is the municipality on the island where the greatest imbalance is recorded. Households in the southern municipality allocate 39.8% of their income to pay rent. This places Yaiza as one of 109 localities in Spain with strained rents, a ranking in which El País also includes three other municipalities on the island, which are Haría, Tías, and Tinajo.
In these three municipalities, households also allocate more than 30% of their income to housing expenses, and therefore, according to the national newspaper, they could meet the requirements for rent regulation through the law currently being negotiated by the central government. As indicated, the proposal made by the PSOE includes two criteria to consider: that rents have risen in five years more than five points above the rise in the regional CPI, and that the average spending on housing "exceeds 30% of the average income or the average household income."
Specifically, regarding Yaiza, the average monthly household income is estimated at 2,230 euros, of which 888 would be allocated to rent and expenses, thus approaching 40% of income. In Tinajo, the average monthly household income is 2,493 euros, of which 34.4% is allocated to rent, or 858 euros.
As for Tías, it is calculated that households allocate 33.9% of their income to rent. From an average monthly income of 2,239 euros, it is estimated that 758 are for housing expenses. Meanwhile, in Haría, the average monthly household income is set at 2,292 euros, of which 741 go to rent, i.e., 32.3%.
The municipality with the least imbalance between the average income of its households and housing expenses is Teguise, where the amount allocated is set at 26.8%. From an average monthly income of 2,646 euros, 708 are set for housing expenses.
For its part, in Arrecife, the average monthly household income is calculated at 2,249 euros, and housing expenses are estimated at 638 euros, which represents 28.4%. Finally, households in San Bartolomé allocate 29.3% of their income to rent: from an average income of 2,420 euros, 708 are for rent and expenses.
