The Order of the Canary Puppy of Lanzarote organizes the celebration of the Finaos with a conference by the Doctor of Sociology Carmen Morales entitled The Night of the Finaos.
The conference will take place at the Benito Pérez Armas House of Culture this Tuesday, October 28, at 8:00 p.m., and the event is in collaboration with the Yaiza City Council.
With this initiative, the Order of the Cachorro continues its task of contributing to the recovery of an old tradition that, unfortunately, has been lost over time. Currently, the word "finado" or "finao" is practically unknown or is in disuse in almost all of the Canary Islands.
The cult of ánimas, that is, of souls, was deeply rooted in Christendom in the 15th century. Ranchos were born within the brotherhoods of the ánimas, associations of the faithful created to pray and celebrate masses for the ánimas, with the conviction that they were helping them to leave purgatory.
The ranchos went through the houses of the towns singing mournful songs and praying for the deceased. Over time, the ranchos began to sing at Christmas. For this reason, some ranchos became Easter ranchos, as is the case with all those of Lanzarote.
