Agents of the National Police in Arrecife have arrested a man of 69 years of age, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against the sexual freedom and integrity of a minor of 16 years age.

The investigation was developed at the end of January of the current year, by the Family and Women Care Unit (UFAM) of Arrecife, after becoming aware of the facts through the management of a children's center on the island.

According to the information gathered, the detainee approached a minor in his vehicle who was waiting for public transport in the vicinity of the center, under the pretext of offering to take him to his destination, taking advantage of the journey to exchange phone numbers with the minor.

That same night, the adult contacted the minor through an instant messaging application, where he allegedly proposed to have sexual relations with him. The minor expressly rejected such proposals, and in response to the refusal, the man asked for the contact of other young people from the center, a request that was also rejected.

After learning what happened, the center's management made the facts known to the National Police.

The agents in charge of the investigation, took a statement from the minor and analyzed the conversations held on the mobile phone, which allowed for the full identification of the alleged perpetrator of the acts.

Once the appropriate steps were taken, last February 13 the agents located the investigated person and proceeded to his arrest with the aim of guaranteeing the protection of the minor and preventing possible risks for other young people.

Once the police proceedings were completed, the detainee was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority, which decreed as precautionary measures the prohibition from communicating with and approaching the minor.

From the Family and Women Care Unit, the importance of communicating and reporting any indication of sexual crime against minors is reminded, a fundamental action to guarantee their protection and prevent new victims.
