The Cardiovascular Surgery unit of the Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, expands its portfolio of services and has performed the first endovascular surgery interventions to respond to vascular pathologies, both arterial and venous, with a less invasive approach. This new technique has a positive impact on the quality of life of Lanzarote patients who have to undergo these interventions without having to be transferred to Gran Canaria.

In recent months, cardiovascular surgery specialists have performed the first endovascular interventions to diagnose and treat different pathologies such as occlusive lesions of the arteries or the detection of aneurysms. In total, they have carried out eight diagnostic interventions and the first therapeutic procedure, which consisted of an angioplasty of the superficial femoral artery in a patient with chronic arterial ischemia.

These new techniques allow treating and resolving arterial pathologies with a minimally invasive approach. In addition, the unit continues to treat other common conditions such as abdominal and lower limb arterial revascularization, occlusion of the carotid arteries and accesses for hemodialysis from a catheter.

Activity growth

The Doctor José Molina Orosa University Hospital has substantially increased surgical activity in the area of Vascular Surgery throughout 2024. Thus, the number of interventions performed in this specialty increased from 227 in 2023 to 326 surgeries that were carried out during 2024, which represents a growth of more than 30 percent.

Regarding Angiology and Vascular Surgery consultations, they have also experienced a significant increase of almost 44 percent, given that the professionals of this unit went from attending 2,105 consultations in 2023 to 3,030 in 2024. Of these, 1,138 were first consultations and 1,892 were subsequent.

Advances in treatments

During the past year and, especially after the launch of the Hemodynamic Cardiology Unit of the hospital, significant advances have been made in the treatment of diseases of vascular origin, since they allow the performance of endovascular procedures in their entirety or the execution of hybrid procedures where conventional open surgery techniques are combined with endovascular procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic, in the same surgical act.

Likewise, they open the possibility of performing more procedures of this type and incorporating other more complex ones into the portfolio of services of the Lanzarote hospital in a progressive manner.
