For more than half a century, humanity has recognized the work of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. Every May 8, to commemorate the birth of that Swiss philanthropist named Henry Dunant, who to "humanize" wars and care for all soldiers and civilians under the principles of universality, humanity and volunteerism, founded the first World Committee of the Red Cross in 1863.
We will have to wait until the weekend for the NGO volunteers in Lanzarote to participate in the commemoration events of the International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The volunteers and workers of the organization on the island, do not want to stop offering their services to the people of Lanzarote and that is why they have moved the celebration to next Saturday and Sunday.
Not everything will be congratulations and mutual congratulations for the work done, there will also be room for reflection. Javier Camacho, coordinator of Social Intervention of the organization in Lanzarote, has planned a meeting between all the volunteers of the island, to talk about the work done, what is good and what is not so positive, "an exchange of experiences between all the members of the Red Cross to improve our work", explains Camacho.
In addition to first aid assistance in an accident, transfer of patients in ambulances in emergency situations or surveillance and rescue on beaches, the Red Cross in Lanzarote develops social assistance activities. With a team of more than 40 volunteers, they provide assistance to the elderly, disabled, prisoners, children and adolescents.
Activities that would be nothing without the volunteers, who give their time and work to improve everything around us. Under the slogan "Volunteers, the strength of Humanity", the Red Cross wants to honor them this year. Tens of millions of volunteers around the world work for the organization, in many cases putting their lives at risk. Javier Camacho takes the opportunity to make a call to the people of Lanzarote, "I encourage all the people of Lanzarote who want to collaborate in our activities, to come to our assembly, get informed and if they like it, come to work with us".
