Caleta de Famara is the favorite Spanish town for female travelers, or at least that is the conclusion of a gender-based study of people who use the "collaborative economy" to travel, presented by Wimdu.es, a private apartment rental platform in Europe. According to the same, the Lanzarote town has 84% of accommodation reservations made by women.
The Wimdu.es ranking has analyzed 100 Spanish destinations with more than 1,000 reservations in the last year and highlights Noja (Cantabria) in second place, with 81.9% of reservations made by women. Other places in northern Spain are also gaining popularity among female travelers, such as Pontevedra, which has registered 77.2% of said gender in apartment reservations.
In general, the list of favorite places for women who use the collaborative economy have in common the attraction of sun and beach, according to Windu.es. Pollensa, in Mallorca, occupies fourth place, with 7.3 out of 10 reservations made by women. In Calafell, Tarragona, the figure is 7.2 out of 10, placing it in fifth position.
Men prefer Tenerife
As for the places preferred by men, the coastal town of Puerto de Santiago in Tenerife leads with 79% the number of reservations. On the same island, Los Gigantes occupies second place with more apartment reservations made by men, specifically 7.8 out of 10 reservations are made by them. Jaca, in Huesca, occupies the third position in the men's ranking with 73.3%.
The study, which Windu.es points out is also "a guide to know where to find more people of the opposite sex" places Vera, in Almería, in fourth place with more apartments with men, with 66.3% of the website's reservations coming from men. In fifth position is Llanes, in Asturias, with 66.1% of reservations.
Bachelor parties, among the possible reasons
"Of the 100 Spanish destinations that we have analyzed, the ratio is quite similar between men and women in most of them, such as Barcelona, Alicante, Las Palmas or Torrevieja. However, we were surprised that in other places, mainly on the coast, there is a strong difference in gender when making reservations," said Javier López, Wimdu's spokesperson in Spain.
López also explained that the positioning of these destinations to celebrate bachelor or bachelorette parties, as well as the configuration that influencers specialized in feminine or masculine lifestyles create in the imaginary, are also helping to consolidate them under these categories.
Origin of those who use shared apartments the most
Wimdu has also analyzed the countries of origin of the women who use shared apartments the most to make a trip. In Spain, the rate is quite equal (51.90% of reservations made by women and 48.1% by men), with women between 35 and 55 years old being the segment with the greatest weight (52%). This situation is very similar to the rest of the European Union countries, although in Germany, Holland, Greece and the Czech Republic women book a little less than men. Worldwide, Australia has positioned itself with the highest percentage of women who use the collaborative economy of the tourism sector: 59.80% compared to 40.2% of men. In addition, women over 55 are the ones who book the most, with 60.40%.
The second country with more women in favor of the collaborative economy is Malta (59.20%) and in third position is Ireland (57.90%). The countries in which men win when booking tourist apartments are Morocco (69.9%), Thailand (66.1%) and Brazil (64.4%).
