At 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, the Puerto del Carmen festivities officially began with the reading of the proclamation by José Antonio Pérez Padrón. At the presidential table and flanked by the mayor of the municipality of Tías, José Francisco Hernández, and the councilor for festivities, Francisco Javier Aparicio, the town crier José Antonio Pérez Padrón revealed his best-kept secret, the proclamation that he had prepared with such care since he was proposed as such.
José Antonio Pérez Padrón was born in the town of Tiagua, municipality of Teguise, he is the sixth of eleven siblings and in 1955 the family moved to live in Arrecife, first in the La Vega neighborhood and later they changed their permanent residence to the Titerroy neighborhood.
José Antonio, like any child his age, began his studies at the Titerroy public school and began high school at the Agustín Espinosa institute in Arrecife, but his student life was cut short at the age of 14 to collaborate in the family's household economy.
In this way, he began working as a messenger in Estatur, a company dedicated to the exploitation of tourist apartments. This is how José Antonio Pérez Padrón made his first contact with Puerto del Carmen, in those years better known as "La Tiñosa".
José Antonio gradually integrated and, little by little, with his desire to improve, responsibility and hard work, he managed to stand out in the world of hospitality. In 1987 he joined the government group of the Tías city council as a councilor for the socialist party, remaining until 2007.
Together with other residents of Tías, he was the driving force behind the creation of the Unión Puerto del Carmen Sports Club in 1983, where he served as president until 1999. Currently, José Antonio Pérez Padrón is the administrative manager of Comunigest Consulting, S.L. and currently resides in the municipality of Tías.
José Antonio, reviewed those first parties that he experienced when he came to work as a boy, reflecting the change in them and also the change in the way of life of the residents of the area.
José Antonio, invited everyone to participate in the festivities as they are an opportunity for residents and visitors to have a few days of healthy fun. After the reading of the proclamation, the mayor presented him with a replica of a boat as a symbol of the seafaring town whose festivities he was proclaiming.
Immediately afterwards, a group of young people from the municipality took to the stage and performed several songs, and then the Mariachi El Puerto performed, arriving from the island of Fuerteventura.
