The vaccination of the third dose of the vaccine against Covid in Lanzarote continues to advance, although at a slower pace than at the beginning, and currently all age groups from 40 years onwards already exceed 60% with the booster dose.

This has been confirmed by nurse Begoña Hernández on Radio Lanzarote – Onda Cero, where she assured that "they are not doing so badly" as she initially thought they would. However, young people between 20 and 39 years old, who were the most resistant to receiving the first two doses of the vaccine, are also the most lagging behind in the booster dose.

As Hernández detailed, the group between 20 and 29 years old reaches 26% of those vaccinated with the booster dose, while the next, between 30 and 39, is at 39.1%. The group of people between 40 and 49, on the other hand, is the first to exceed that barrier of 60%, already reaching 61.4%. "From there upwards, in all groups, we are above 79%," says Hernández.

Likewise, the nurse has been "very happy" with the pace of pediatric vaccination on the Island, which she says is "the highest in the Canary Islands". Specifically, 62.1% of children between 5 and 11 years old have already been vaccinated with one dose, and starting this Wednesday, February 9, they will begin the inoculation of the second vaccine to this age group.

Begoña Hernández has also explained what the procedure is for that second dose for children under 12 years old who have had Covid. "We calculate eight weeks after the diagnosis, not the discharge, and then we vaccinate with the second dose," explained Hernández, who even adds that they have contacted the families of children who have tested positive to cancel their appointment, since they could not be vaccinated with the second dose because they have not completed those 8 weeks.

Third dose "recommended" five months after having the disease

Begoña Hernández recalls that the recommendation of the Ministry of Health for those people who have had the disease, after receiving the two vaccines against Covid, is that they receive the booster dose "five months later."

However, she emphasizes that it is "an interval" between 4 weeks and 5 months, and that therefore, people could get it at any time after four weeks.

"If a person is going to travel, or only wants to get it, they could from 4 weeks," explains the nurse, since she maintains that the strategy "in no case" requires it to be at 5 months.

Fourth dose of the vaccine for immunocompromised people

The nurse has also taken advantage of the interview on Radio Lanzarote to announce that, starting on February 15, they will begin the vaccination of a fourth dose for immunocompromised people. In this case, according to Hernández, it would also be a booster dose for people with specific diseases, such as Down Syndrome or HIV.

"They initially received three doses, because they needed them to become immunized, and now they would receive the fourth," Hernández detailed, who clarified that it would not be elderly people, but only "vulnerable" people.
